Oakville sign and vineyard

Only a crossroads on Napa Valley’s famous Highway 29, tiny Oakville has become perhaps the only single-business gourmet mecca in California. Its one grocery store, founded in 1881, is known far and wide. In fact, apparently the hamlet’s 70 or so residents believe it offers everything they need to satisfy their day-to-day needs when it comes to living the good life in California’s Wine Country.

This mini-district is known by wine lovers as the Oakville AVA, and its revered To Kalon, a vineyard first planted in 1868, today produces the most expensive cabernet sauvignon grapes in the entire Napa Valley. There are over 5,000 acres of vineyards, and two dozen wineries in this appellation. Most notable among them are Opus, Silver Oak and Far Niente.
