Sonoma County Farms and Farmers Markets are two of the best reasons for living in this beautiful part of California. Imagine living here, in close proximity to the freshest produce for your farm to table dining experience, twelve months a year. It’s peak harvest season now as summer eases into fall. You can meet many of the farmers at these markets and stands and get the latest intel on how local specialties go from the garden to your home. Some local farms allow visitors to pick-their-own flowers, pumpkins, berries, and apples. Here are eight of my favorites:
1) Green String Farm
Located in Petaluma, this farm is open year round. Be sure to try the Revolution Bread which is AMAZING. This farm focuses on aiding, rather than fighting natural processes to grow healthy and happy fruits and vegetables through unique sustainable farming practices. Founder Bob Cannard has been supplying fresh produce for the celebrated Chez Panisse over the last 25 years. There’s also a farming school in case you want to start a sustainable farm yourself!
2) Oak Hill Farm
For more than 50-years, Oak Hill Farm has grown flowers and produce using sustainable agricultural practices in the temperate Mediterranean climate we enjoy living in Sonoma County. Open on Saturdays from May to September. Be sure to pick up one of their lovely wreaths. Perfect for any front door!
3) Paul’s Produce
Locals rave about Paul’s Produce. Open every Saturday. You can also find Paul at the popular Tuesday Night’s Valley of the Moon Certified Farmer’s Market on the Plaza in Sonoma and the Friday Morning Sonoma Valley Certified Farmer’s Market also in Sonoma.
4) Tierra Vegetables Farm Stand
When you visit this farm stand you are invited to check out the entire farm. Serving family fun along with seasonal produce harvested daily and grown at the farm. Check out the bounty of prepared food items created using the seasonal abundance. Kids love to meet one of the farm dogs or the white kitty that complements the Big White Barn.
5) Halle’s Apple Farm
The fifth generation farmers assist visitors with all of their apple and gourd needs. Check out the wonderful assortment of apples as well as fresh apple juice. Bring the kids to pick out a pumpkin!
6) Andy’s Produce Markets
Andy’s is the largest open-air market in Northern California featuring an abundance of locally grown and organic produce. There’s also delicious prepared foods, and an eclectic selection of wines you may not find anywhere else.
7) Grandma’s Pumpkin Patch
Let the kids go crazy climbing hay bales in the pumpkin patch, then enjoy a treat from the store or bring your own picnic. Be sure to check out the store’s handmade craft items and pick up some farm fresh eggs while you’re there.
8) Hector’s Honey
Do you like honey? Who doesn’t? This farm stand offers visitors the freshest, most natural honey that you have ever tasted. We’re talking blackberry, wildflower, star thistle, lavender, etc. You will definitely find the honey of your dreams at this stall.
